Course Options for 2011/2012
Language and Literature: Ireland has a rich literary heritage extending back hundreds of years and has made an outstanding contribution to literature in all its genres. This study area will offer an introduction to the work of well known Irish writers and poets, past and contemporary.
Politics and Conflict: Ireland’s turbulent history provides the student with a complex backdrop in which to study the causes and effects of conflict. The resolution of the conflict in Northern Ireland through the Peace Process of the ‘90s will be of interest to students engaged in the study of politics, sociology and conflict studies.
Philosophy and Spirituality: This study area is designed to challenge the learner in the disciplines of philosophy and spirituality. It will explore the universality of central Truths that exist in Celtic spirituality and in the major philosophies.In Celtic spirituality there was the profound belief in the inter-connectedness of all things.The course will attempt to recover the meaning of the word philosopher in its truest sense as a of lover of wisdom, which is another word for spirituality .This study area will allow time out for students to explore their own spirituality and connectedness with the world.
The Arts in Ireland: Ireland is home to a thriving arts community where creativity and imagination can flourish. Students will be presented with a cultural experience that will give an introduction to the Arts in modern Ireland. This study area will be of particular interest to those students who are engaged in the study of; English Language Arts, Visual Arts, Music, Dance, Theatre.
Irish language and Heritage: The Irish language (Gaeilge) is one of the oldest languages in Europe and can trace its roots back to the 4th AD. This course, which is at beginners’ level, will enable the student to gain a basic competence in the language, and will also provide for the study of aspects of Irish heritage, folklore and rural traditions.
Additional courses in the area of Education or Business in Ireland may be offered if demand exists. Alternatively courses may be custom-designed to suit the specific requirements of US students and their Colleges.
